There are a lot o f interest facts about African elephants.  For 
a  start,  they’re  the  largest  living  land  mammals  in  the  world. 
Male elephants weigh about 6 tonnes. Females  are smaller than 
males.  Their  weigh  is  about  3  tonnes,  but  that's  still  very 
heavy!  Elephants  eat  bark,  fruit,  grass  and  leaves.  They  are 
very  strong  and  will  push  down  trees to  eat from  them.  Water 
is  extreme  important  to  them  because  they  drink  up  to  50 
gallons  a  day.  They  also  have  the  able  to  find  water  in  the 
ground. They do this by digging deeply holes in the earth using 
their  trunks.  It's  thought  that  they  find  these  locations  by 
communicating  with  other  elephants.  A  few  years  ago  they 
were  close  to  extinction  because  people  hunted  them  for  their 
ivory tusks.  Today they have better protect from hunters.
