Activity 4
Look at the illustration below, read the information and
discuss it in groups.
Solar energy (energy from the sun) is vital to the existence
o f planet Earth. It passes through the atmosphere to Earth's
surface. This is not a problem, provided that Earth sends some
o f this solar energy back into space. This process is called
radiation. However, in recent years, partly because o f pollution,
Earth has not radiated enough o f the solar energy back into
space. Some o f the solar energy reflects back onto Earth's
surface, making Earth warmer than it should be. This process is
called the greenhouse effect, and the result is global warming -
planet Earth is now hotter than it should be.

2. W hich of the changes w ould you consider acceptable
and which would you consider unacceptable? W rite a short
composition explaining your views. You d o n 't have to refer
to every point in th e W a te r Crisis poster. O rganise your
composition as follows:
• P a ra g ra p h 1 - introduction
Mention the solutions from the poster that you are going to
cover.
• P ara g ra p h 2 - acceptable solutions
Explain which solutions you think would be acceptable in
your country, and why. If you can, say i f you think they would
be acceptable in other countries, too.
• P ara g ra p h 3 - unacceptable solutions
Explain which solutions you think would not be acceptable

countries, too?
• P a ra g ra p h 4 - conclusion
Your personal opinion about the seriousness o f this
problem and any other suggestions you want to add.
W A TER CR ISIS
This region is facing a serious w a te r shortage. If we
d o n ’t take action NOW , o u r supply of w ater m ay end
suddenly.
We are considering the following solutions.
1.
I f people live in an area where there isn't enough water,
they will have to move to an area where there is more water.
2. If water consumption in an area has to be reduced by
10%, then water supplies will be cut off for 10% o f the time.
3. If the situation gets worse, water supplies to homes will
be cut o ff completely. Water will only be available from
special pipes at street comers.
4. People will be encouraged to reduce the amount o f water
they use for washing, cooking and cleaning.
5. Services such as car-cleaning and window-washing will
be suspended.
6. People will be encouraged to buy bottled water for
drinking.
7. Public swimming pools will be closed until the water
crisis has ended. Private swimming pools m ay have to close as
well.
8. Non-emergency hospital operations will be postponed,
but otherwise, hospitals won't be affected by these changes.
