A CASE OF STUDENTS IN YEOJU TECHNICAL
INSTITUTE IN TASHKENT

Annotation: 
In students’ academic life, learning the English language plays one of the essential 
roles to achieve more success. In this case, the motivation for learning this language can be caused by 
different reasons. This article clarifies these different motivations among students in Yeoju Technical 
Institute in Tashkent (YTIT).

Introduction
Learning a second language is a long-term task, and it should be done continuously to achieve an 
advanced level (Robert C. Gardner, 1985). In order to master a language, motivation plays an essen-
tial role. Motivation can be categorized into two branches: intrinsic and extrinsic motivations (Ryan 
& Deci, 2000). Intrinsic motivation is about the inner interest of the learner that brings an outcome 
such as satisfaction and pleasant feeling. In contrast, in extrinsic motivation, a learner is stimulated 
by outside factors, for example, reward or punishment. However, the phenomenon of motivation is 
a complex and extensive concept that confuses the identification of motivation behind a person’s 
behavior. Due to this, motivation can vary in different measurements. For instance, the level of mo-
tivation – how much learner has motives to learn a language and orientation of motivation – what is 
a type of motivation as above mentioned two categories of motivation or other types created by other 
scholars, et cetera (Ryan & Deci, 2000).
