3. In what ways is the environment protected in your country?
Well, I know the government has implemented（＝put in place) a lot of laws in the last few
years to help tackle all these environmental issues ． Since 2008 ， all supermarkets, department
stores and shops are prohibited from giving out free plastic bags． Customers need to buy them
instead. I think it is a great measure but it is not enough. I believe we should completely stop
producing plastic bags, because if you really think about it, we don't need them, and they always
end up being burnt or floating in a river anyway. In addition, because desertification remains a
serious problem, our government has initiated a "Green Great Wall" to circle the encroaching
desert （ ＝ the desert that is spreading wider every year). It's essential to hold back the desert
because it creates sand storms, which I am sure you have heard about as they are frequent in
Beijing and they also threaten our agriculture. Finally, I know they are passing some laws to
modernize our industrial sector and slow down pollution. But I think we shouldn't be trying to
slow it down 一 we should really be taking measures to reduce it dramatically.
