• Influenza occurs in epidemics or in sporadic cases and is characterized in its typical form by sudden onset. There is fever lasting from 1 to 7 days, accompanied by excessive malaise, prostration, backache, pain in the limbs and muscles, sore throat, bronchitis. The causative agent is a filterable virus. The source of infection is discharge from the upper respiratory tract of infected persons. Treatment of influenza consists of rest in bed, sedatives, analgesics and cough mixtures which afford much comfort to the patient.
• Hypertensive heart disease is common. It results from prolonged hypertension and it is most frequent after the age of forty. The cause of hypertension is still unknown. Symptoms are dyspnea on exertion, high blood pressure, cardiac hypertrophy; there may be gallop rhythm and cardiac asthma. Treatment includes physical and mental relaxation, exercise and some drugs, such as nitroglycerin and Phenobarbital. A reducing diet is recommended for obese patients.
