The World Macroeconomy
An overview of the world economy.

• 
  Monitoring macroeconomic performance: Growth and business cycles. Gross domestic product. Accounting identities. The current account. Current account deficits. What causes current account deficits. Prices and real quantities.
  
• 
  Business cycle and financial indicators: Business cycles and economic indicators. Unemployment rate, Okun's Law, inflation, and the Phillips Curve. Bond prices and yields. The Expectations Hypothesis. Real and nominal rates of interest. Forecasting with the yield curve.
  
• 
  International indicators: Trade balance, current account and capital flows: Balance of payments accounts. The sustainability of current account deficits and large foreign debt: the role of the capital account. Nominal and real exchange rates and the PPP. Fixed exchange rates, real exchange rate appreciation and current account deficits. Interest rates and exchange rates: the covered interest rate parity condition (CIPC), the uncovered interest rate parity condition (UIPC), determinants of exchange rate.

  Productivity and growth: Inputs and outputs. Sources of growth. Returns to education. Technology. Management strategies: cooperation and competition.
  

The classical theory of the long-run.

  Output and real interest rates in a closed economy: The labor market. Savings, investment and the rate of interest. Short-run equilibrium and long-run dynamics. International borrowing and lending.

  Money, inflation and nominal exchange rates in the long-run: The quantity theory of money. Open market operations. Interest rates and inflation. Friedman’s money growth rule.

  Real exchange rates in the long-run and short-run: Foreign exchange rates. Classical theory of exchange rates. Fixed exchange rate regimes.
  

The Keynesian theory of the short-run. Fixed exchange rates and their collapse: the Asian crisis and the European monetary system. The IS/LM model in the closed economy. Trade imbalances, exchange rates, macro policies, globalization and problems of global capital markets. Inflation, wages and unemployment. Government deficits. Monetary policy and commercial banking.
