The automobile life cycle

Today people buy cars due to a demand on transportation, mobility, independence, and convenience. Cars are actually major contributors to air pollution.

After the lifetime of a car ends, these vehicles are sent to recycling plants to be crushed and made into a recyclable item. In fact 75% of all cars are recyclable. In order to do this, the tires must be pulled off of the vehicle and the fluids must be drained. Both the fluids and the tires are sent to their recycling plants because they can be reused and turned into usable materials for future cars. After being crushed many of the materials on the car can be reused or are already recycled from past cars or other products. All types of metal such as aluminum and steel can be taken off of past cars, melted down and made into new parts such as the body of the frame and radiators. Metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium are reused to develop the catalytic converter. Glass can be broken up and melted down from past cars to be made into new windshields. Plastics can be melted into basically anything on the car ranging from body panels, fenders, dashboards and even headlamps. Rubber can be cut and melted into things like gaskets, belts, and tires. Lead can be recycled into new lead-acid batteries. However, not everything from old cars can be reused, things like upholstery and seats cannot be reused and must be trashed when crushing the car.
