During the Soviet period, the agricultural sector
made up more than 40 percent of GDP. Since
independence, this percentage has decreased: at
the end of 2007, the agricultural sector made up
only 20 percent of GDP. This decline is in the
context of Uzbekistan’s continuing significant
agricultural reforms, including the important
step of transferring government farms to the
private sector. From 2000 to 2006, the percentage
of the industrial sector in GDP increased from
14.2 percent to 22.1 percent. The majority of
industrial sector production belongs to large
enterprises. The combination of a growing
rural population (almost 64 percent of the total)
and a declining agricultural sector has lead to an
increase in inequality between rural and urban
areas, and has created challenges in addressing
low living standards.
