2. THE PROCESS OF RESEARCH
The research was carried out on a sample of 88 students through the third and the fourth year of the Faculty.
83 % of the main group was covered whit it so that the obtained results are relevant for drawing a conclusion. The students’ attitudes were collected on basis of the questionnaire that contained a mix of question types. It was divided into three parts: A, B and C.
In parts A and C, in open type questions, they were requested to answer the questions and express their personal opinions.
In part A the students were requested to answer the following open type questions:
What are disadvantages of global language?
What are advantages of global language?
What makes one language global language?
In part C students expressed their opinions by answering the following question:
Could anything prevent English language to become global?
Part B is made out of four statements:
English language is going to be the leading language in the following 50 years.
English language is going to be the leading language in the fields of business, mass media and communication.
English language is going to be the leading language in the fields of movies and music.
English language is going to be the leading language in the fields of education and science.
The students estimated them on the scale of Lickert’s type. For chosen answers the following evaluations were predicted:
5 – I fully agree
4 – I agree
3 – I hesitate to give an answer
2 – I do not agree
1 – I do not agree at all
3. THE RESULTS OF RESEARCH
From this research we are going to find out the opinion of students who are attending the Faculty of Economics and Tourism about English as a global language.
According to the results of the research the most common answers to the question: What are disadvantages of global language? are the following:
a danger of losing and forgetting the culture of other languages,
neglecting national language and culture,
possibility of disappearing «small languages» and
there are no disadvantages.
Regarding to the advantages of global language the top four there are the following:
possibility of easier communication in all parts of the world,
simplicity in using and free flout of information and
unique language that is used in all segments of life by great number of people.
The most common answers to the question: What makes one language a global language? are:
the language that is used by majority of population,
the language that is considered in a way official and
the language that is worldwide known.
The results for the part B are the following:
Picture 1: English is going to be the leading language
in the following 50 years.
From the graph is seen that a great number of students fully agree (33) or agree (46) that English is going to be the leading language in the following 50 years. 8 students are not sure about their opinion and only 1 student does not agree with the above-mentioned statement.

media and communication.
According to the results 85 students from the sample of 88 students, fully agree or agree that English learning is going to be the leading language in the fields of business, mass media and communication.
Picture 3: English language is going to be the leading
language in the fields of movies and music.
72 students agree or fully agree with the statement that English language is going to be the leading language in the fields of movies and music. What is very interesting, only one student among example of 88 students disagrees with the above mentioned statement.
Picture 4: English language is going to be the leading
language in the fields of education and science.
31 students hesitate to give an answer to the question if English is going to be the leading language in education and science. There are few students (4) who disagree with the leading position of English language in above-mentioned fields but still a great number of students (41 fully agree and 12 agree) express their agreement.
The most common answer to the question from the part C: Could anything prevent English language to become global? are:
79 students answered no, i.d. they believe that nothing could prevent English to become global language giving the following statements:
- English is already a global language.
- Because the knowledge of English is necessary in using Internet.
- Because, English is the language used by great number of people.
- There is a need for unique language, which is understood all around the world and that is English.
The results can be shown graphically as follows:
7 students think that there are some possibilities that could prevent English to become a global language such as:
- Implementation of a new unique language,
- Economic crises,
- Growing of national identity.
Only 2 students hesitated to give an answer.
