Commentary
1. Captain Kangaroo
is a children’s television series which was 
aired weekday mornings on the American television network CBS 
for nearly 30 years (1955—1984), making it the longest-running 
nationally broadcast children’s television program of its day. The show 
was conceived and the title character played by Robert James Keeshan 
(1927—2004), an American producer and actor, who based the show 
on “the warm relationship between grandparents and children”.
2. Global Village 
is a term popularized by Marshall McLuhan in 
his books “The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man” 
(1962) and “Understanding Media” (1964). By coining a number of

media related terms, the Canadian educator, philosopher and com-
munication theorist predicted the World Wide Web thirty years 
before it was invented. In his works he predicted how the globe has 
been contracted into a village: electronic technologies have made the 
instantaneous movement of information all over the globe possible.
3. Mickey Mouse
is one the world’s most recognizable cartoons that 
was created in 1928 by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. As a proper name, 
it has become the mascot of the Walt Disney company. As a common 
name, it has been used attributively since 1930 in informal American 
English to show one’s disapproval of a thing or an event. According to 
Merriam-Webster’s Learner’s Dictionary, “Mickey Mouse” currently 
has the following meanings: “small-time, amateurish, ineffective, un-
important, trivial, or annoyingly petty” as in “He took a lot of Mickey 
Mouse courses when he was in college” and in “At town meetings she 
insisted on airing every little Mickey Mouse concern she had”. How-
ever, in the UK and Ireland it can mean “of poor quality or counterfeit.” 
Even more surprising is the fact that in some parts of Australia it can 
be used approvingly in the meaning “very good, excellent”.
