LOVE AND ROMANCE
Young people generally start to have romantic (1) … at school or
college. In the US this is called (2) …, and in Britain going out to-
gether or seeing somebody. It is common for young people to hold

119
hands with their boyfriend or (3) … and to kiss in public. People who
find it difficult to get a boyfriend or girlfriend may use a dating (4)
… or advertise in the (5) … column of a newspaper.
If a relationship becomes serious the two people may get (6) … and
then get married. But it is also common for a couple to decide they
want to have a permanent relationship and to (7) … together without
getting married. In Britain and the US this is now socially acceptable,
though in the US living together is generally seen as a step towards
(8) … .
Marriage is still popular, though people tend to be older when they
get married. People can marry at 18, or at 16, if their parents agree,
but the (9) … age is, in the US, 23 for women and 26 for men, and in
Britain 26 and 28 respectively. In past time, if parents didn’t approve
of a marriage, the couple (10) … .
Marriage has some economic benefits. In Britain, for example, there
are tax advantages and in the US only a (11) … can be covered by a
health insurance policy. Whether a couple are married or are living
together, they normally expect each other to be loyal and not to have
an (12) … with anyone else.
In Britain people who are in a (13) … relationship often refer to
their boyfriend or girlfriend as their (14) … , but the word can also
refer to a business partner. In the US the latter terms are preferred.
Other words occasionally used include ‘significant (15) …’, a person
who is special and important, and also POSSLQ. This humorous name
comes from the way the government refers to people living together
as ‘persons of the opposite sex sharing living quarters’.
