White Collar Crime
Have you ever wondered why certain crimes are named differ-
ently from others? Are some crimes more or less evil or bad, more
illegal than others? What is meant by the term white collar crime?
Who commits white collar crime and how are they punished? Are
those who commit white collar crime any more or less dangerous than
those who commit murder or armed robbery?
Mr. Sutherland, the man who coined the phrase ‘white collar crime’
(WCC) defines WCC as “crimes committed by a person of respect-
ability and high social status in the course of his occupation.” Put
simply, white collar crime is a crime committed by someone trusted
who makes crime a part of his career. This includes embezzlement,
accounting fraud, insider trading, tax fraud, ID theft, environmental
crimes, computer fraud etc. White collar crimes are opposed to street
crimes which tend to involve force and violence.
Instead of using guns and weapons to rob, white collar criminals
tend to use paperwork and computer. With the Internet made so eas-
ily available, it provides a perfect opportunity for white collar criminals
to work and escape. As a rule white collar crime goes undetected.
Most people shrug white collar crime off as a rare event, fooling
themselves into believing that the damage is small. But the cost of fraud
based white collar crime in the US is over 40 billion per year while the
total cost of all American bank robberies in the last 100 years is less
than a cost of a single corrupt. However, money is not the only cost.
The ripple effects of human suffering are quite substantial. While it is
not likely today, some families affected by WCC in the past have lost
so much money that they starved or committed suicide.
So if you simply throw away your bank statements at the end of
the month without destroying them, you have left yourself open for
identity theft. The same thing can happen if you give credit card
details or bank account information out over the phone or internet.
The information in the wrong hands can cause you problems. You can
give someone the opportunity to spend money on your account, take
out loans and purchase things.
So white collar criminals can be just as dangerous as any other
criminal and can do even more damage.
