Numeric codes for States, Counties, Cities and Townships

Part 1 presents an index of geographic locations in the United States together with the standard codes for states, counties, cities and townships.
States are given alphabetically and assigned two-digit numeric location codes. Counties are named separately in alphabetical sequences at the beginning of each state and assigned three-digit numeric codes. Cities and townships are arranged alphabetically within each state and given four-digit codes. Thus, a nine-digit numeric location code is used to identify a location by state, city/township, and county.
A city name listed more than once with the same city code but different county code (e.g., Atlanta, GA) is one city overlapping two counties. A name listed more than once with two different city and county codes (e.g. Uniontown, PA), indicated two separate cities.
