INTRODUCTION 
The lifestyle changing could trigger of degenerative diseases might cause cell and tissue damage or imbalance of 
free radicals. Some physical and chemical factors such as metals, non-saturated fat, heat, dye, preservatives, and 
radiation by global warming could provoke degenerative diseases [1]. Free radical is an unstable and very reactive 
atom or molecule since it contains one or more unpaired electrons in the outer orbital. To make it stable, the free 
radical will react with the molecule around it in order to make it a paired electron. This reaction will go on 
continuously in the body and if it is not ceased, it will cause many ailments like cancer, heart disease, cataract, early 
aging and many other degenerative diseases. Thus, the body needs important antioxidants, which could capture the 
free radicals [2,3].
The microorganism such as molds for production of antioxidant has not been studied yet, especially for 
pharmacology use. An antioxidant was produced by 
Penicillium janthinellum
,
 P. commune

P. herque
,
 Eurotium 
chevalieri
and 
A. niger
[4]. In vitro study reported by Nainggolan (2005) [1] showed that fungal 
A. terreus
extract 
expressed a high antioxidants activity as proved by IC
50
value of 44
µg/mL.
A. niger
also reported that extract has 
the highest antioxidants activity compared with 
A. foetidus

A. usami
and 
A. terreus 
extracts [5]. Ethyl acetate 
extract from fermented
 A. candidus
in a liquid culture medium showed a high antioxidants activity [6]. 
Universitas Indonesia Culture Collection
 
(UICC) preserves some collections of 
Aspergillus
spp., which have not 
been studied yet for their capability to produce antioxidants. This study was aimed to produce antioxidant of 12 
strains of 
Aspergillus
spp. belonging to Universitas Indonesia Culture Collection (UICC).
