Make a Wish

Nora sat by the well and washed her dishes. Today had been a very hot day. She scooped an extra bucket of water from the well to quench her thirst. As she lowered the bucket again, she happened to notice a small cup resting on a rock just outside the well. When she brought the water up again, she picked up the cup and set it by her stack of dishes.

Nora used the water to wash the dishes. As she rubbed the small cup, a cloud of smoke and a genie appeared. Nora was stunned. She did not know whether to run or stay.

“Do not be afraid,” said the genie. “I am the genie of the cup. I will grant you three wishes.” “Three wishes?” asked Nora in disbelief.

“Three wishes, but that is all—so choose your wishes wisely.”

Nora’s first wish was to have all the toys she ever wanted. Her wish was granted. But after five minutes of being with all the toys, she was ready to have some peace. Each toy made its own noise, and Nora could hardly hear herself think.

Her second wish was to have all of her favorite foods. Nora realized this, too, was a foolish wish because she got so full that she felt sick.

She wised up for her final wish and stated, “I wish to give my wish to someone else.” “Wise choice,” said the genie, who then disappeared inside the cup.
