Pastors Thoughts

This weekend out country observes the annual celebration of its Independence and Birth - a fact that our Founding Fathers believed God had rather a lot to do with!  Their vision of the dignity and rights of human beings and how they should govern themselves is based on what God Himself has revealed to be His purposes in creating man on this earth.  The Holy Gospel of Jesus this weekend returns to the story of the 72 disciples, who were sent to carry on the Lord’s work, equipped more with spiritual gifts than with material resources, and who achieved many successes.  However, the Lord reminds them that their true greatness resides not in having accomplished great things, but in truly being His disciples in their hearts.  Likewise, our nation and we its citizens have managed to achieve much and accomplish great things - but our true greatness lies in remembering and recognizing the God whose children we are and whose fundamental Truths are the foundation of all we have done.  These Truths, like the sovereignty of God in all things, that the ultimate standard of good and evil, right and wrong lies with Him and not us, that His abiding presence and influence must reign in the hearts of citizens to make them virtuous, and that only virtuous citizens can shape their nation in healthy ways, that the common good of all is the guiding light of our society, and that good is what God shows us, not what most indulges us.  That these principles are worth striving for, fighting for, sacrificing for and even dying for - for they not only create a just society on earth, they help us to be part of the eternal society in Heaven.  Our country, and we its citizens have much to celebrate - but also much to live up to and much to continue to strive for.

May God Bless America!
