Develop a design for an action research study to answer a school-based question. Use the following headings 
in your written plan:

To get started selecting your topic, use the beginning words or phrases in the list of questions in the 
chapter (“How can I. . . ” “What is the best way . . . ” or “Why . . . ” ) . Brainstorming is a good way to 
choose a topic: “What classroom problem or issue do you need to improve or resolve?” Eventually 
narrow your topic to “The purpose of this study is ... ” (see Task 7 Example). 
Research questions should be narrow enough to be answerable. Your question or questions should 
contain language that indicates what action or change you are implementing in the study to improve 
teaching or learning. For example, “What is the impact of X on Y?” is more action-oriented and specific 
than “How can I improve Y?” 
The intervention should describe what you or your group of researchers will implement in the 
classroom to study. For example, if you are implementing a new teaching strategy, explain what it is 
and why you want to implement and evaluate it. 
The participants section should describe the participants and the context of the study. 
The description of data collection should include multiple data sources, collection methods, the 
timeframe of the study, and duration of data collection.
