Mirgorod
The collection of short stories called "Mirgorod" is subtitled: "Stories that serve as a continuation of "Evenings on a farm near Dikanka".
Indeed, the relationship between "Mirgorod" and "Vecherov..." immediately catches the eye.
Here and there-Ukrainian themes;in both collections, romantic-fairy-tale plots are interspersed with realistic ones.In the collection "Mirgorod" in the romantic style of "Evenings..." written stories "Viy" and "Taras Bulba".
"Viy", as Gogol himself points out,is a folk tale, and therefore there is a lot of fiction in this story. But science fiction does not overlap inthis content of the story.Description
the seminary, the life of the students, their characters, the centurion's yard-all this is given by Gogol in realistic terms.Just as in the stories of " Evenings...", here the writer's sympathies are on the side of simple people, full of strength and health.
"Taras Bulba"is a historical novel.Gogol began to work on it with knowledge of historical documents that tell about the Zaporozhye Sich in the 16th and 17thcenturies,about the heroism of the Cossacks, firmly united by great feelings of camaraderie and love for their homeland.
The Cossacks depicted by Gogol are real epic heroes, heroically fighting for the independence of their homeland. No wonder the writer speaks about them in the language of epics: "Where nezamainovtsy passed-so there is a street, where they turned-so there is a lane.So you can see how the rows thinned and the lyakhs fell in sheaves."
Taras Bulba, his son Ostap,Mosiy Shilo,Kasyan Bovdyug, and many others are a vivid image of the heroic folk character. But above all is Taras Bulba. An ardent patriot, fiercely hatingthe wrath of his homeland, loyal to the peopleand their customs,a terrible avenger of the oppressed,a wise and brave commander who firmly held on to the Cossack comradeship, and without flinching killshis own traitorous son-such is Taras in Gogol's image.
The image of Bulba is drawn truthfully and convincingly.Gogol presented his character in its entirety, heroic features are combined in it with ordinary, everyday properties.
Taras's domestic life, the Zaporozhye Sich in peacetime and during the war,and the descriptions of Ukraine in that troubled time-all this is given in the story historically truthfully and convincingly.
I can't help but see the events that are taking place in Ukraine today. How rich is great Ukraine with truly folk heroes, similar to Taras Bulba!Glorious arethe Ukrainian people, who dearly love their country, who do not spare their lives for the sake of its liberation from the fascist thugs who are there today! This is what kind of Ukraine Gogol wrote about in his works! This is the real Ukraine!
