“Death of a Hero”
 
Aldington's somewhat autobiographical novel
,  Death of a Hero,
  published ten years after  the  war, 
graphically  depicts  the  impact  of  war  on  a  soldier's  civilian  life.  It  is  dedicated  to  the  so-called  "lost 
generation". ("Lost generation" is an expression widely used about the generation that had taken part in 
World War I or was affected by it). Aldington's "Death of a Hero" is regarded as one of the most powerful 
antiwar novels of the period.  
The  story explores the 
alienation
  and isolation of a young soldier, George  Winterbourne,  upon his 
return home on a leave of absence. Readers know from the outset that Winterbourne is eventually killed in 
battle,  and  the  book  outlines  the  events  and  social  conditions  that  lead  up  to  the  tragedy.  The 
Winterbourne  family were ignorant,  snobbish, self-assured. Young George  turned away from the gods of 
his class and found an alternative in art and literature. Beauty was opposed to the hateful narrow-minded 
bourgeois way of thinking. The need to express his feeling for beauty made George go in for painting. His 
natural turn of mind went contrary to the upbringing his family and his schools were imposing on him. As 
for his own ideas,  George  reveals them in his conversations with his future wife  Elizabeth. They talked a 
great deal about the social problems and the need for social reform. Another problem that dominated in 
the minds of young intellectuals like George and Elizabeth was what was called ‘free love’.  
Aldington,  like  his  hero,  hated  the  society  he  was  the  part  of.  In  his  novel  he  tells  the  bitter  truth 
about it.
