Literary  activity  and world  outlook  of Henry  Longfellow.  Criticism  of racial  discrimination 
and slavery. 
 
Henry  Wadsworth  Longfellow  (1807-1882)
  American  poet, 
one  of  the  most  popular  and  celebrated  poets  of  his  time.  He  was 
the  professor of  modern  languages  at  Harvard.  He  was  responsible 
for  the  misty,  ahistorical,  legendary  sense  of  the  past  that  merged 
American and European traditions. He was the poet for the people – 
a popular man who always seemed to please his readers. He wrote 
poems  on  a  wide  variety  of  subjects,  often  focusing  on  noble 
sentiments that caught the spirit of the time. This sense of nobility, 
along with his enthusiastic optimism, won him a huge  and devoted 
audience.  
 
Longfellow  received  wide  public  recognition  with  his  initial  volume  of  verse, 
Voices  of  the  Night
 
(1839), which contained the poem “A Psalm of Life.” 
His poetic works include: 

 
Ballads
  (1841),  in  which  he  introduced  some  of  his  most  famous  poetry,  such  as  “The  Wreck  of  the 
Hesperus,” “The Village Blacksmith,” “The Skeleton in Armor,” and “Excelsior”; 

 
Three  notable  long  narrative  poems  popularizing  native  legends  on  American  themes: 
Evangeline
 
(1847),  about  lovers  separated  during  the  French  and  Indian  War  (1754-1763); 
The  Song  of  Hiawatha
 
(1855),  addressing Native  American themes; and 
The Courtship of Miles Standish
  (1858), about  a love 
triangle in colonial New England. 
Longfellow's other works include 
The Seaside and the Fireside
 (1849); 
Tales of a Wayside Inn
 (1863), 
containing  the  well-known  poem  “Paul  Revere's  Ride”  and 
Ultima  Thule
  (1880).  Longfellow  also  made  a 
verse translation of 
The Divine Comedy
 (3 volumes, 1865-1867) by Italian poet Dante Alighieri. 
Longfellow's poetic work is characterized by familiar themes, easily grasped ideas, and clear, simple, 
melodious  language.  Most  modern  critics,  however,  are  not  in  accord  with  the  high  opinion  that  was 
generally  held  of  the  author  by  his  contemporaries,  and  his  works  are  often  criticized  as  sentimental. 
Nevertheless, Longfellow remains one of the most popular of American poets, primarily for his simplicity of 
style  and  theme  and  for  his  technical  expertise,  but  also  for  his  role  in  the  creation  of  an  American 
mythology.  His  verse  was  also  instrumental  in  re-establishing  a  public  audience  for  poetry  in  the  United 
States. 
Longfellow  also  wrote  textbooks  on  modern  languages  and  a  travel  book  entitled 
Outre-Mer
, 
retelling  foreign  legends  and  patterned  after  Washington  Irving's 
Sketch  Book
.  Such  short  lyrics  as 
"The 
Jewish Cemetery at  Newport
" (1854), "
My Lost  Youth
" (1855), and "
The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls" 
(1880) 
continue to give pleasure.

Longfellow  brought  European  culture  to  the  attention  of  Americans,  and  in  turn  spread  American 
folklore in  Europe,  where his  work  was  popular.  American readers  liked  Longfellow’s lyrical style,  which 
was influenced by the German Romantic poets, and they were pleased by his emphasis on such subjects as 
home, family, nature, and religion. His style and subjects were conventional, especially in comparison with 
Whitman or other modern writers, and over the years. 
Local color writing has old roots but produced its best works long after the Civil War. Obviously, many pre-war 
writers, from Henry David Thoreau and Nathaniel Hawthorne to John Greenleaf Whittier and James Russell Lowell, paint 
striking portraits of specific American regions. What sets the colorists apart is their self-conscious and exclusive interest in 
rendering a given location, and their factual, realistic technique.
