The novel “The Man of Property”. Contradictions and systematicity of images. The notion “Forsytism”. 
“The Man of Property” shows two successive generations of a rich upper-middle class family at the 
end of the 19th century. It is a social novel: the author shows the Forsyte family as a small unit of an English 
upper-middle class society of his own time. The Forsytes possess all the features typical of their class, and 
they  have  to  obey  the  laws,  which  govern  it.  He  who  dares  to  disobey  these  laws  is  excluded  from  the 
society. Such was the case with young Jolyon who became  an artist, left his wife  and daughter and lived 
with a foreign governess whom he married after his wife’s death. This step made him an outcast of society, 
disinherited by his father and deeply despised by the Forsyte clan.
