“Monumentenwacht” System as a Method for Conservation 
of Historic Buildings
The role of monitoring and maintenance has been emphasized since the 
first international charters that has been acknowledged in conservation 
of historic buildings. Despite the fact that the approach and practice of 
“preventive conservation” is generally executed in conservation of 
artefacts in museums and interiors, the organizational work for the 
preventive conservation of architectural heritage has been demonstrated 
since 1970s in Europe. “Monumentenwacht” system which basically 
relies on the yearly inspections of historic buildings has first started in 
Holland and has successfully followed by the organization established in 
Belgium. The aim of the system is to prevent severe deterioration and 
damage by regular inspections and small scaled repairs which is 
supported by a detailed report and advisory support. The structure is 
prominent when it is evaluated within political, cultural and economic 
perspectives of conservation. While constantly improving in Holland and 
Belgium, the system is being tried with slight changes or via pilot 
projects in different European countries. These examples should 
carefully be examined and discussed that a similar organizational 
scheme in Turkey may be a prospect in the near future.
