When researching products for potential 

purchase, IT workers will often have to speak 

with people they have not previously met in 

order to obtain information. As they are 

representing their company, they have to pay 

more attention to politeness than normal. 

Indirect questions, such as those they just heard 

in the listening, are useful for this.  

 

With books closed, ask students, in pairs, to 

work out the rules for forming indirect questions 

by looking at the sentences in Activity 4. Then 

ask them to read the Language box to check.
