2.2 Developing FLT through Internet and Digital technologies.
Technology has permeated every aspect of our lives, not immune to that is the way we learn new concepts. It has completely enhanced the language learning experience for both teachers and learners. 5Learning activity:

  • Students work with internet based online learning for English for academic purposes (EAP) content.

  • Students identify EAP topics of their internet search for and later summarize the information related to one of the topics of their choices.

  • Students use a wiki to upload resulting from student searching.

Pedagogical rationale for Using Technology.

  • Students are given access to a specialised learning management system (LMS) tht provides them with abundant content related to their field of preference or area of expertise that would be unavailable otherwise.

  • Students search for highly specialised content on the internet. This affords them the opportunity to engage in practice that will be commonplace throughout the graduate and post graduate study programmes in which they will eventually be participating.

  • Wiki's are an ideal medium through which students collaborate in providing course relevant content for everyone's use. They are empowered to contribute and made to feel important.

Benefit for teachers and students.

  • Students can build up their vocabulary, apply grammar for EAP and develop their situational scheme in relation to science technology engineering math(STEM) and other academic areas. The teacher is partly relieved of the duty in providing and explaining highly specialised content.

  • The process of searching, reading, selecting and presenting information engages students in higher order thinking skills. The presentation and dissertation stages promote high quality 1.2 output.
