Worksheet D
- The Environment Quiz How much do you know Environmental Problems that face the world today? Look at the quiz and try to answer the questions. Leave room for the actual answers later.
1. What are CFCs and how do they affect the environment?
Chlorofluorocarbons are very harmful for us as it is the main reason for depletion of ozone layer which protects us from harmful Ultraviolet Radiations coming from sun.It result in the increase in temperature of earth which makes sustainability of life on earth harder and affects us directly.
2. What alternative forms of energy do you know?
Wave Energy.
Biofuels. ...
Natural Gas. ...
Geothermal Power. ...
Wind Energy. ...
Biomass Energy. ...
Tidal Energy. ...
Hydrogen Gas. Unlike other forms of natural gas, hydrogen is a completely clean burning fuel.
3. What is the Ozone Layer? What does it do? What is happening to it?
The Ozone layer is a layer of gas high above the surface of the earth that helps to protect it from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, which can damage our skins and cause cancer. Scientists have recently discovered holes in the Ozone Layer, caused by substances called CFCs (clorofluorocarbons) onsequences of ozone layer depletion. Since the ozone layer absorbs UVB ultraviolet light from the sun, ozone layer depletion increases surface UVB levels (all else equal), which could lead to damage, including increase in skin cancer.
4. How are forests good for the environment? What is happening to them?
Forests cover about a third of the earth's land area and are essential to the health of our environment. For example, trees and forests absorb and store much of the carbon dioxide that otherwise would be contributing to climate change. Forests are home to about 80 percent of remaining terrestrial biodiversity. The forest environment or site consists of the physical environment surrounding the aerial portions of the tree (climatic factors) and that surrounding the subterranean portion (edaphic factor) and the third one is biotic factor. External influences, particularly fire, grazing and browzing animals and humans, affect markedly the nature of sites and their capacity to support tree growth. As the forest becomes established and develops, the site itself is greatly changed. Forest cover moderates the extreme diurnal temperature regime of open sites resulting in more uniform conditions. Wind velocity is slowed in the vicinity of tree crowns and becomes negligible within the forest.Trees crowns intercept sunlight and alter the quantity and quality of radiation reaching forest floor compared with that reaching open sites. On the forest floor, accumulating layers of leaves, twigs and other litter attract a characteristic grouping of plants and animals that live on decaying organic matter and on each other.
5. What is a hybrid car? How does it help the environment?
Environmentally Friendly: One of the biggest advantage of hybrid car over gasoline powered car is that it runs cleaner and has better gas mileage which makes it environmentally friendly. A hybrid vehicle runs on twin powered engine (gasoline engine and electric motor) that cuts fuel consumption and conserves energy. This entirely depends on how your drive your hybrid car and where you source the electricity you need to charge the battery with plug-in hybrids.
If you frequently do short journeys using just the battery power and charge it using 100% renewable electricity then yes, your hybrid is much better for the environment than a regular car as you’ll be effectively emitting zero carbon into the atmosphere.
6. What is acid rain?
Some poisonous gases dissolve in water in the atmosphere and then fall to the earth as acid rain. Acid rain also damages trees and buildings, and can kill fish in lakes and rivers. Rivers can also be polluted by industrial waste from factories and chemical fertilizers and pesticides used by farmers.
7. What is recycling? How does it help the environment?
Recycling is the processing of used objects and materials so that they can be used again. About 60% of rubbish from homes and factories contain materials that could be recycled. Recycling saves energy and raw materials, and also reduces damage to the countryside. Glass, paper and aluminium cans can all be recycled very easily. Many towns have special bins for bottles and cans where people can leave their empty bottles and cans for recycling. A lot of paper bags, writing paper and greeting cards are now produced on recycled paper.
8. What is the Greenhouse Effect?
The greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the Earth's surface. When the Sun's energy reaches the Earth's atmosphere, some of it is reflected back to space and the rest is absorbed and re-radiated by greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases include water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone and some artificial chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). The absorbed energy warms the atmosphere and the surface of the Earth. This process maintains the Earth’s temperature at around 33 degrees Celsius warmer than it would otherwise be, allowing life on Earth to exist.
