8.1.9 TAKE PART EHABILITATION OF THE EARTHQUAKE EFFECTEES:
PTC should play an active and key role in the rehabilitation process of the effectees of recent devastating earth quake in Mansehra and Azad Kashmir. This will help PTC:
-
Build its image as a true socially responsible company. &
-
Eliminate the risk of low supply of FCV tobacco from the area, as the growers will become able to get back to farming.
8.1.10 ELIMINATE POST DOWNSIZING EFFECTS:
PTC should take committed steps to eliminate the adverse effects of the current downsizing. There is a wide spread fear and de-motivation among all the remaining employees which may effect their productivity and loyalty towards the company. Thus PTC should take them into confidence and clarify its downsizing policy before them.
8.2 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR COUNTERACTING THE ANTI SMOKING ISSUE:
In this regards the company should:
-
Involve schools/colleges in programs such as afforestation and waste recycling programme which should also include visit to the plant.
-
To more effectively reflect the company’s policy of “Underage sale is prohibited”, PTC should arrange special programs in schools about the side effects and negative impacts of smoking and develop a check system for controlling the underage sale by its retailers.
-
The general feeling of the public about smoking is that “smoking is injurious to health”. So PTC should take initiative by publicly publishing its policy stating “smoking is an adult informed choice” and thus clarify its view.
-
PTC should also eliminate the general negative feeling of the public regarding its business that it is trying to make the people addicted to smoking. this could be achieved by publishing in public places its policy stating “our business is not about persuading people to smoke, it is about offering high quality brands to adults who have already taken addicted to it”.
8.3 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE AKORA KHATTAK FACTORY:
8.3.1 INTERNEES TRAINING PROGRAME SHOULD BE IMPROVED:
At PTC the training programme for internees and apprentices is a good one but if we compare it with the other multinational companies in the country then it is found that it still needs improvement. For example,
-
A single person should be assigned a part time responsibility for the internees’ affairs in each department.
-
Internees should be given regular briefings/lectures, once or twice a week, about the company, its culture, management and other relevant information.
-
Tours to the Head Office, Jhelum Factory and Buying Depots must be arranged for the internees so that they may fully understand the operations over there.
8.3.2 CONVEYER BELT MUST BE INSTALLED BETWEEN “CTS” & “LRR”:
In the Primary Manufacturing Department (PMD) where the tobacco is made ready for to be converted into final product the leaf is brought from CTS (Cut Tobacco Store) to its LRR (Leaf Reception Room) manually due to which wastages occur. Thus a conveyer built must be installed which would not only reduce wastages but also reduce a 3-men burden on PTC.
8.3.3 LOCAL SUPPLIERS MUST ALSO BE CONSIDERED:
Most of the materials used in the production process are imported by the company, which is resulting in a high the cost of goods sold figure. Thus PTC should depend more on local materials, which will not only reduce the cost but will result in improvement of local industry. The MMD/FSCD must find potential suppliers within the country and recommend them to the authorities.
8.3.4 EHS POLICY MUST BE FULLY OBEYED IN GLT:
In the GLT working area, there is a high volume of dust and noise. Though the management has introduced ways to eliminate its effects on employees by providing them with Dust Masks and Ear Plugs, yet their use was not common among the employees. Thus the management should take strict steps to impose the usage of dust masks and ear plugs.
8.3.5 SAFETY BOARDS MUST BE REGULARLY UPDATED:
Inside each department of the factory there is board carrying information regarding the current noise and dust level and the supervisors are responsible to update these. But during my visits to the floor I often found these un-updated. This may pose a physical risk to the health of the employees. Thus the floor manager must take notice of such inconsistencies.
8.3.6 FIXED ASSETS RECORD KEEPING MUST BE IMPROVED:
The fixed assets inventory record, though being computer based, is not satisfactory. Some assets that are made DOFA (Disposal of Fixed Assets, an Account) or sent Repair for years are still present on the record. Similarly there are some assets which are not worth including in fixed assets (e.g. calculators) are present on the fixed assets record. Thus the recordkeeping must be improved updated on a quarterly basis.
8.3.7 CLEARLY CONVEY MISSION STATEMENT TO ALL EMPLOYEES:
Although the company has done efforts to convey its own mission statement as well as those of the individual departments to the employees, however this can be further improved by displaying the mission statements in local language as well, so that everyone may clearly understand the mission.
