INTRODUCTION
Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a Gothic novella by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, first published in 1886. The work is also known as The Strange Case of Jekyll Hyde, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, or simply Jekyll and Hyde.The novella follows Gabriel John Utterson, a London legal practitioner who investigates a series of strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and a murderous criminal named Edward Hyde. It is revealed at the end of the novella that Jekyll and Hyde are the same person, with Jekyll transforming into Hyde via an unnamed chemical concoction to live out his darker urges.Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is one of the most famous pieces of English literature, and is considered to be a defining book of the gothic horror genre. The novella has also had a sizable impact on popular culture, with the phrase "Jekyll and Hyde" being used in vernacular to refer to people with an outwardly good but sometimes shockingly evil nature.
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is about Mr. Gabriel Utterson, a lawyer, investigating strange events that affect his client and friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll. The novella opens with Mr. Utterson out on a walk with his close friend and distant relative, Richard Enfield. As they walk through a relatively quiet and pretty neighborhood, they come across a home in disrepair. The doorway of the home serves as a refuge for nefarious activity.
As the two men notice the doorway, it reminds Enfield of an incident he witnessed in which the mysterious and grotesque Mr. Edward Hyde trampled a young girl as she was running to fetch a doctor in the middle of the night. Enfield describes the man as abhorrent in appearance. He and other witnesses to the crime forced the assailant to pay the child's parents 100 pounds. In order to retrieve the banknote, Hyde uses the door to enter his lodgings. The banknote is signed with Edward Hyde's name, which is how Enfield comes to know the name and pass it on to Utterson. The name Edward Hyde is familiar to Utterson. Hyde is named as the sole heir to the fortune of his client and friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll. Utterson also knows that the door is a back entryway into Jekyll's home. Hyde has a key to Jekyll's home and can come and go through the back door as he pleases. Jekyll only uses the front door.1
As Utterson learns more about Edward Hyde, he grows concerned for his friend, Jekyll. While having dinner at Jekyll's home, Utterson confronts him about his will. Dr. Jekyll refuses to change it, though Utterson presents him with evidence that Hyde is not a good person. Jekyll claims that he is in an awkward position and cannot change his will. Dr. Jekyll becomes more and more reclusive, avoiding his once close friend, Mr. Utterson. Utterson grows suspicious that Edward Hyde is somehow blackmailing Henry Jekyll.
