Libraries are not always used to gain knowledge rather they have some other 
business as well. Often they are used to play role in the development country 
by assisting the members of the parliament and legislating bodies. The 
National Diet Library of Japan is famous for such a role in the country. 
Commonly known as the NDL, the National Diet Library of Japan is the only 
national library in the country and plays different roles in line with the roles of 
a moderate modern library. The library was established in 1948 and the key 
aim was to aid the policy makers of the country. So the library is kind of similar 
with the Library of Congress in the United States of America which is used for 
research and analysis before making any law or policy for that state. 
The library was formulated under the National Diet Library Law while the Law 
was formulated based on the Article 130 of Diet Law of the country. This is a 
separate law and been formulated to help the Diet members in taking 
decisions. Thereby, the library has been built on a large scale. The National

NDL is located in Nagata-Cho, Chiyoda-ku, in Tokyo and the other one is in 
Kyoto. But in the beginning, the main library, in Tokyo, was not in its current 
place rather it was housed in the State Guest House which was known as the 
Akasaka Detacher Palace. The initial construction of the main building was 
done in 1961 and the complete construction was done in phases that took 
several years to complete. 
This is one of the largest libraries of Japan and the total area of the main 
building alone is 148,000 square meters and able to contain over 10 million 
books. The library is well spacious and ventilated. Since the library was 
intended to be used by the policy makers, politicians and the people related to 
the legislative body, the features and facilities have been extended up to the 
mark. Most of the materials, books and volumes have been brought here 
considering the needs of the policy makers. But some other library facilities are 
also available in both of the buildings of the library which could be used by 
both the government executives and the commoners of Japan. 
This is a very famous library in Japan as it provides the necessary services to 
the government members, executives, members of judicial wings and the 
people of Japan. The two main buildings are located in Kyoto and in Tokyo but 
considering the public interest, some other branches have been set across the 
country. The library contains almost all the copies of publications that have 
been published in Japan. Besides, the foreign language collection is also 
extensive and enriched and the special collections are adorable. The library has 
a huge collection of books and documents on the history of Japan, science and
