Sign language interpreter - interpreter who facilitates communication between people who are deaf or hard of hearing and people who can hear. Sign language interpreter must be fluent in English and American Sign Language (ASL).
Simultaneous interpretation - one of three modes of interpreting (along with consecutive and sight interpretation), in which an interpreter interprets the message orally at the same time as the speaker is speaking. The interpreter usually sits in a booth and listens through a headset or other equipment.
Source language - the language in which text was originally written.
Stylistic meaning is based on the stylistic stratification of the English vocabulary and is formed by stylistic reference, e.g. face (neutral), countenance (literary), mug (colloquial).
Target language - the language into which text is translated.
Technical Translation. A technical translation refers to the need for specialist translators due to the use of uncommon and difficult vocabulary in a text. Topics such as medicine, finance, law, engineering, computing, and many other specialist fields would all be considered as technical.


Telephone interpretation - interpreting a conversation over the phone.
Translation, translating - the process of facilitating written communication from one language to another. It is performed by a translator. Translation should almost always be done by a native speaker into his/her own mother tongue.
Translator - one who renders written text from one language into another language.
Transcribing. The act of copying down speech into a written text, usually from audio or video recordings. This can either be done to record the spoken text itself or to form a source text so that the speech can then be translated. So for example, strictly speaking a “transcription” of a French audio recording would produce a text written in French. This could then be translated into English as a separate exercise.
Transliteration - the process of representing text in the characters of another alphabet. For example, one can represent/transliterate Russian text into Latin alphabet, so that it can be pronounced by English speakers.
Transposition is defined as a change in the order of linguistic elements: words, phrases, clauses and sentences. Their order in the TL text may not correspond to that in the SL text.
