Machine translation - translation performed by computers using various computer programs without a human translator's input in the process. Machine translation cannot be relied upon as its accuracy is very low and the meaning in most cases is distorted.
Mother Tongue. A person's native language: the language they first learned in childhood and know most naturally. Normally a translator will be most skilled translating into their mother tongue as this is usually the language they know best. However, this is not an absolute rule. Because a person who has lived in another country for many years may be more fluent in their second language than they are in their mother tongue (for example if their education was conducted in their second language), the language of habitual use is often placed alongside mother tongue as the language into which a translator can work effectively.


Native language - it is the first language a person learns and usually is known as a person's "mother tongue".
Non-equivalents are SL words which have no corresponding lexical units in the TL vocabulary.
Notarised Translation. A special type of certified translation required for some legal translations where a translator or a representative of the translation agency swears under oath that a translation is true and accurate before a Notary Public. Where a notarised translation is required this should be intimated to the agency in advance so that arrangements can be made.
Referential meaning (also called nominative, denotative or cognitive) has direct reference to things or phenomena of objective reality, naming abstract notions and processes as well. Referential meaning may be primary and secondary thus consisting of different lexical Semantic Variants (LSV).
Sight interpretation - one of three modes of interpreting (along with consecutive and simultaneous interpretation), in which an interpreter reads a document written in one language and orally interprets information into another language.
