  1. Theoretical bases of the methods and ways of translating phraseological units;

  2. Basic ways of translating phraseological units:

  1. word-for-word (verbatim, loan) translation;

  2. translation by analogy;

  3. descriptive translation.


The aim of the lesson: Developing theoretical knowledge and practical skills on phraseological problems of translation: expanding knowledge and developing skills on the use of ways of translating phraseological units.



Pedagogical objectives

  • Expanding knowledge on the basic ways of translating phraseological units;

  • Developing skills on the use of word-for-word (verbatim, loan) translation of phraseological units;

  • Developing skills on the use of translation of phraseological units by analogy;




  • Developing skills the use of descriptive translation of phraseological units;


  • Outlining and clarifying basic ways of translating phraseological units;


  • Clarifying the distinctive features of cases with a word-for-word reproduction of phraseological units and applying this way to the translating process;

  • Clarifying the distinctive features of cases with translation of phraseological units by analogy and applying this way to the translating process;

  • Revealing and clarifying the distinctive features of cases with descriptive translation of phraseological units (explication of phraseological unit’s figurative meaning) and applying this way to the translating process;
