Student-centered instruction give students a number of opportunities to engag more actively in the process of learning. Teachers encourages learners by allowing them to share in grouo decisions, leading learning activities, and participating more effectively in discussions. In this learning the teacher still has an authoritative role but the students and the teachers play an equally active part. In recent years Student centered Learning has become one of the most common way of learning process. When it comes to our universiy, wehave made a lot of student-centered lessons not only in the fields of profession, I mean English, but also in other sphere of subjects. In most practical English lessons, as well as seminars I can make one example: the subject of Country Study tought by Halima Muhammadieva. Actually, we are divided into smaller groups and the teacher gives optional topics related to the theme and each group has a chance to choose. Turn by turn group members present their topic according to their desire wheher it can be poster, ppt, project work etc. In this process the primary function of the teacher is to coach and facilitate students' learning and comprehension of the subject material. In the mean time it is good to give questions to each group at the end of the presentation which is very fruitful and effective.
I make another common activity of learner-centered instruction that we have had during the lessons:
* Students quiz each other by showing each other pictures :
Do you see this picture?
How do you say this in English?
What words come to your mind when you see this picture?
*Students get together with others and review the answers, they can use vocabulary such as:
What do you think about... ?
What did you answer in question.... ?
*In groups, the learners brainstorm sentences on a certain theme (things they have done, hobbies etc. which relate personally to the learners). Someone in the group writes down one sentence per person in the group. The sentences are cut up into individual sentences and then distributed among the other groups in the class. The teacher at this point makes sure that each group has the same number of sentences. The groups then transform the sentences into questions which each learner writes down. All the learners from all the groups mingle to ask each questions and find positive answers (there may be more than one) to their questions. The groups reform to share information.
There are several characteristi features of learner-centered approach:
* Students work harder than teachers. In most classes, teachers are doing too many learning tasks for students. But in this sphere they extend part of responsibilities to the learners.
* Students learn from classmates. They can learn from and with each other. Certainly the teacher has the expertise and an obligation to share knowledge.
* Students learn more experiences and active involvement.
* Students apply new learning to real life, authentic experiences. Classes focus more on skills that you can use in real life application hardly ever motivate students to engage in meaningful learning.
* Students regularly engage in communication. They need to communicate with each other and that's why this approach to teaching bring more benefit than teacher instruction
My brief conclusion about learner-centered approach is that it engages students in their own success—and incorporates their interests and skills into the learning process. Students support each other’s progress and celebrate successes.
