Remind students that authors write for different purposes. Common purposes include: to entertain
to teach, to explain, and to persuade. Read the instructions at the top of the page aloud. Then remind 
students of the 
Ask Questions
strategy, which was taught during Week 5. Say: Sometimes a passage 
can have more than one purpose. As you read, stop after each paragraph and ask yourself,

is the purpose of this paragraph?
Then have students read the passage. When students have finished, 
direct them to complete the skill and strategy practice activities. Review the answers together.
